Tonut vineyards extend over about 40 hectares, of which 30 are planted to vine, on the hills behind Cormòns. Our native varieties, which have been cultivated in Friuli for centuries, give some of Italy’s best white wines (Friulano – former Tocai Friulano -, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Ribolla Gialla, Traminer Aromatico, Malvasia) and interesting red wines (Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Pinot Nero).
All the vineyards are irrigated by a sub-surface drip irrigation system, which is with underground water pipes that maintain the soil humid and supply water only to the roots of the vine. Indeed, at Tonut Vineyards and Winery we are particularly sensitive to the environmentally friendly aspect of every vineyard operation, this is the reason for choosing an irrigation that minimizes waste by evaporation and allows for optimal water supply to the vines. This shows how fundamental respect for the environment and sustainability are for the Tonut family.
We process our grapes and support our wine making using the most advanced and cutting-edge technology: healthy freshly harvested grapes are immediately transferred to the winery to start the wine-making process.
The white grapes are crushed and pressed to obtain the must which undergoes cold stabilisation and begins its alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts.
The red grapes, instead, are gently crushed and undergo maceration in contact with the grape skins in large vats (10 – 25 days) for maximum color and aromatic extraction.
After vinification the wines age in stainless steel tanks until the following spring, when they are filtered, bottled and made ready for release.
